xQc revealed recently that he received an offer of $1.2 million for promoting NFTs. All he would have to do is post three sponsored tweets, participate in a five-minute “visit,” and use a custom overlay for his Twitch stream. It’s a glimpse at what celebrities are offered just to help provide NFT sales legitimacy and how the reach of blockchain technology advertising is reaching Twitch and its lucrative, and often underage, audience.

Those who are familiar with xQc and his views on NFTs and blockchain technology already know what his response was. xQc told his viewers that as “astronomical” as the offer was for him to advertise NFTs, it was “more fun” to tell them no. xQc turned down $1.2 million to advertise NFTs because he disagrees with what NFTs are and what they represent, something he’s made very clear over the past year.

xQc has previously called NFTs scams, garbage, and similarly vulgar descriptors. He’s frequently addressed NFT efforts by other Twitch streamers or organizations with disdain. In early February, xQc said the esports teams selling NFTs were “s***” for profiting off of their fans. He also had a public spat with fellow Twitch streamer Destiny, leaking a message from Destiny in which he decried NFTs. Destiny had recently taken an NFT sponsor for his channel, in a hypocritical turn.

It just goes to show how susceptible celebrities are to NFTs, regardless of whether they’re scams, do serious environmental harm, or otherwise. $1.2 million wouldn’t be easy for anyone to walk away from. xQc happens to be wealthy enough that even an offer like $1.2 million may not have forced him to think twice about capitulating on his values. Other Twitch streamers, like Destiny, may not be similarly positioned.

This likely isn’t the last offer that xQc will receive regarding NFTs or other blockchain technology-related offers. And as astonishing as the offer is, it likely isn’t the biggest offer xQc will receive, either. NFT organizations will only see his endorsements that much more of a lucrative possibility. It would certainly get news coverage, as xQc is wont to do.
