Earlier this year, Nintendo officially revealed Xenoblade Chronicles 3 via an announcement trailer, and the video itself showed off quite a bit. From familiar character designs to the large, sweeping landscapes that Xenoblade Chronicles is known for, the third installment will likely have a lot going for it. In terms of active gameplay, the trailer didn’t show that much, but as of today, fans will have a much better idea of what combat will look like in Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

A new press release from Nintendo revealed several new details regarding combat in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. As seen in the announcement trailer, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will have up to seven playable characters during active combat, with each one having their own individual class that can be customized later in the game. Not to mention the new Interlink system, which causes tag team pairs to transform into a gigantic creature called Ouroboros, which appear to be similar to the Skells in Xenoblade Chronicles X.

In a lot of ways, the combat system builds upon Xenoblade Chronicles 2, seeing as the previous installment had players controlling six characters at once and also featured a class system. Although, the classes in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 didn’t allow for any sort of customization, whereas Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will give players a lot more creative control in that regard.

It’s amazing to see how far Xenoblade Chronicles has come as a franchise. The original Xenoblade Chronicles received a limited release in North America back in 2012, and since that time, major characters in the series like Shulk have appeared in Super Smash Bros. and numerous additional installments have been released on multiple Nintendo platforms.

In any case, it will be interesting to see what Monolith Soft has in store for its player base. The core strengths of the Xenoblade Chronicles series have always been the expansive, detailed environments, the intricate world-building, and memorable narratives. It seems fans will certainly have a lot to look forward to in terms of Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 releases July 29, 2022, for Nintendo Switch.
